Engineered nanoparticles for ocular drug delivery targeting Retina

Abstract

Drug delivery to the posterior eye segment of eye remains a challenge because of the complicated biological barriers. To overcome the anatomical and dynamic barriers, researchers apply polymeric nanoparticles to enhance the therapeutic effects and reduce the injection frequency. To achieve better delivery efficiency and certain cell targeting in the posterior eye segment, the movement and distribution of polymeric nanoparticles with different parameters (size, shape, surface properties, etc) in the vitreous and retina were observed and investigated after intravitreal injection. After correlating the movement and distribution with these parameters, the rational design and optimization of the polymeric nanoparticles for ocular delivery could be achieved, which will greatly improve the therapeutic effects and make a significant contribution to the treatment of eye diseases.
