A Study of Developing Dura Mater Substitutes Using Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene


Dura mater is the outermost and most substantial meningeal layer of central nervous system tissue, and it acts as protective membrane for the brain and spinal cord. The defects in dura mater can lead to the leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), infection, non-healing wounds, hydrocephalus, encephalocele and epilepsy. Therefore, maintaining the integrity of dura mater and developing suitable dura substitutes are very essential. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is widely used in bioengineering and mechanical fields due to its outstanding chemical resistance, wear resistance, mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. Consequently, UHMWPE shows great potential in developing dura mater substitutes..
