Development of heterogeneous metal catalysts for catalytic wet air oxidation of electroplating industrial effluents

Abstract

Electroplating is a process that uses electricity to coat or plate a thin layer of metal onto the surface of another more precious metal. Normally, metal is dipped into various types of solutions for electrodeposition and then rinsed it with water. Such a process will generate huge amount of wastewater that contains various kinds of metal ions, typically nickel, zinc, copper, silver and gold, in very high concentration and low pH of 3-5. Therefore, the wastewater is extremely toxic and must be treated to meet the regulation standard prior to discharging. Limited by its high toxicity and low acidity, cost-effective biological wastewater treatments are not applicable.
