Materials for Moisture Harvesting

Abstract

Water is an important resource that is facing scarcity, and the lack of clean drinking water is a global challenge. Technologies for water harvesting from moisture are possible only below dew point temperatures, and thus often requires air cooling to condense moisture. The goal of my research is to develop material technologies that allow water harvesting above dew point temperature, and will leverage on advances in nanotechnology to achieve this goal. Conceptually low water activity materials can be confined within superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic matrix that acts as a barrier to condense water from vapor, to allow for their collection. Preliminary work showed that this is possible, and deeper understanding of the phenomena will provide important insight for the design and optimization of the materials.
