Disinfection Activity and Toxicity Studies of Ionic Liquids


Microbial like bacteria and algae can reproduce quickly and directly or indirectly lead to environmental pollution or human disease. To decrease the risk of pollution and illness, technology of disinfection is called to be introduced to human daily life. This study is to build an effective evaluation system for toxicity and disinfection activity towards bacteria and fungi of ionic liquids (ILs). Application method will be later developed based on preferable combination of ILs selected by this evaluation. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium and hexafluorophosphate [PF6], tetrafluoroborate [BF4], iodine, hydrogen sulfate, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide are adopted as cationic group and anionic group respectively and combined to compose ILs. Escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus as gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, Scenedesmus quadricauda and porphyra haitanensis as freshwater and seawater algae are selected as tested subjects.
